A community for gifted teens

This is the first, and at present, the only, livejournal community for any gifted teenagers not affiliated with any particular program. It is created and moderated by a 17-year-old gifted girl who calls herself Pandora.

Why a community for gifted teenagers?:
Being a gifted teen is more than being gifted or being a teenager. Like all other teenagers, we're developing our identities. But our intense self-scrutiny and self-awareness can lead us to feel incomplete and stuck. We are, in many ways, fundamentally different. So we face (or feel that we face) a constant conflict between being ourselves and being accepted. It's also harder to find "kindred spirits" who really understand us as we are.
Finally, we excel at talking ourselves into corners. We frame every issue as all-or-nothing, either-or. We believe all sorts of self-destructive things, but they seem reasonable to us because we've already addressed all possible arguments in our heads. It's almost impossible to argue us out of a position we've argued ourselves into.

Here, we can meet other gifted people, discuss our experiences, and be accepted. We can share information and resources in a safe, and stimulating, discussion group.

This community is for gifted teenagers. But if you're a parent, a teacher, a sibling, a friend, or just curious, stick around and see what we're all about.

I'm not a big fan of rules, but here are my expectations for how we'll conduct ourselves:
1) We'll be kind to each other. People may choose to share opinions or experiences that are personal or deeply meaningful to them (or they may not; we'll see). And others may strongly disagree; that's the way of the world. If you want to argue, be kind. Respect the other person's experiences and his/her right to a different opinion and, obviously, don't make any personal remarks. The mod (that's me) may referee disputes if she so chooses.

2) You can talk about anything related to giftedness. But please, save your discussion of random movies, favorite foods, celebrities, and fanfiction for someplace else. The mod (that's me) will exercise the final judgment about what's relevant.

3) If you're not a gifted teenager, you can still post. Please, ask questions and share your knowledge. Just be respectful and nonjudgmental. If you're an adult, please speak to us respectfully even if we may seem immature or ignorant. If you're not gifted, please don't rail at us for being stuck-up and elitist. Again, the mod will exercise the final judgment.

4) Finally: we have the right to decide for ourselves whether or not we are gifted. Please, no telling other people here that they're "not really gifted."

That's all. I hope you enjoy this community and look forward to talking to you here!
